KoyaQuest is an in-depth, interactive guide to the many fascinating places of Japan's Mt. Kōya.
While the guide features provide everything a visitor needs to enrich his or her experience of Mt. Kōya, KoyaQuest is also an interactive game comprising multiple location-triggered Challenges designed to increase your engagement with the history, culture and natural beauty of this amazing place.
The main menu screen features a scroll bar that automatically highlights nearby landmarks as the user moves about Mt. Kōya.
The images in the scroll bar control the title image, which is a link to a detailed page.
A scrollable list view provides an alternative means of finding and linking to information on each of the featured landmarks.
Through links provided on both of the previous screens, users can access and scroll through detailed descriptions.
If a user is within close proximity to the landmark, an option to provide a star rating is displayed.
An audio player is available for those who would rather look at the real world around them than stare at their iPhone.
The yearly calendar is fulled with various ceremonies and observances. KoyaQuest explains the major ones.
What's more, the app will alert users to events that are taking place in real time. If you see something going on an wonder what it is, chances are KoyaQuest will have the answer!
Suggestions for half-day, one-day and two-day stays will help visitors make the most of their time at Mt. Kōya
In addition to physical landmarks, KoyaQuest provides descriptions of popular activities such as Ajikan Meditation, Shakyō Sutra Copying and the Night Tour of Oku-no-in.
Twelve "Challenges" are waiting for you as you journey through Mt. Kōya.
Each challenge is associated with a particular location. As a user enters within a certain radius of the target zone, the iPhone will buzz and a link will appear with an invitation to accept the challenge.
Each game is preceded by a brief description.
No two challenges are alike. Some test your powers of observation. Some require luck and simple video game skills. Others reward your intuition, attention to detail and memory.
While some are pure fun, others can help users learn and understand more about Mt. Kōya.
All of them are designed to enrich each user's experience.
Buddhist temples are traditionally guarded by fierce, warrior-like beings known as "Kongō-rikishi." They ward off the enemies of the religion.
Until the early part of the 20th century, only men were allowed to enter Mt. Kōya. But the religious piety of women who, over the centuries, made the rigourous trek up the moutain to pray outside its gates is celebrated today.
In this fun little challenge, the user becomes a guardian and must block the evil golbins from entering the gate. But be careful not to impede the progress of the women pilgrims who are now very welcome on the sacred mountain!
