The building nearest the Splashing Jizō is the Oku-no-in Gomadō, which takes its name from the flat wooden sticks (goma) used in one of the most distinctive rites of Shingon practice.

In this ritual, goma, which represent worldly desires, are burned in a purifying fire before a Buddhist altar.

The ritual has origins in Indian Brāhmanism and Hinduism, and the word "goma" is derived from the Sanskrit "homa", meaning offertory flame.

The rite is conducted at various temples throughout Mt. Kōya, and may be witnessed by guests who enjoy temple lodgings.

In addition to the conduct of the goma fire offering ritual, the Gomadō is where worshippers can purchase thin wooden strips known as sōtoba which (after being inscribed with the name of a deceased person) can then be placed before the Splashing Jizō.

The Gomadō also houses a wooden statue of Kūkai believed to have been carved by himself when he was 42 years old – an age which the Japanese believe is particularly perilous for men.
