Mausolea for Matsudaira Hideyasu and his Mother

A mainstay of many guided tours to Oku-no-in are two imposing stone mausolea located near the end of the Oku-no-in sandō (about 100 meters before the resting place of Kōbō-daishi). These mausolea belong, respectively, to a consort and a son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the powerful military leader who established the Tokugawa Shogunate at the beginning of the 17th century.

The smaller, simpler structure on the left belongs to Lady Oman, also known as Lady Kogō (1548-1619); the other, featuring a curved eave above the entrance and a roof in the more complex hip and gable style, is that of her son Hideyasu (1574-1607). The two buildings were made from volcanic stone from the province of Echizen (present-day Fukui Prefecture) and have been designated as important cultural properties.

The mausoleum for Oman was erected by her son Hideyasu in 1604. When Hideyasu himself died three years later, his 13-year old son and successor, Tadano, erected the second mausoleum.

These two mausolea are are given specific mention by UNESCO in its list of cultural assets included in its Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range sites description.
